The new Sweetwater Bike Park provides a regional scale bike park facility that is unprecedented in San Diego. The park provides large-scale features, previously unavailable in San Diego’s parks, including a jump line, flow trails, pump tracks, and a skills area that are highly valued by the San Diego mountain biking community. The project minimized grading by working with the existing terrain, protected existing habitat areas, and cleverly provided for stormwater capture and drainage on the site. This park will serve as a figurehead for all future bike park projects in the area and may lead the way for more projects of the same scale.
The enormous turnout to the bike park’s ribbon-cutting ceremony and the high number of regular users that have been observed since opening point to the high demand for a bike park facility of this scale and scope. San Diego mountain bike riders have been strong advocates for a bike park of this kind for many years. As designed, the bike park provides areas for users of all skill levels. The jump line is used by highly experienced riders to ride high and perform tricks, the flow trails and pump tracks provide speed-based experiences for intermediate riders, and the skills areas are designed to teach basic techniques to beginners. This park is a perfect example of the County’s “Live Well” initiative to support a healthy, safe, and thriving community. Riders of all ages will get a workout as they fine-tune their skills on a variety on increasingly challenging attractions
