Located along Ocean Street in the Carlsbad Village are seven beach access points that lead beach visitors and patrons down to the remarkable North Carlsbad Beaches. Over time the coastal environment has weathered and degraded the access points which are now in significant need of refurbishment.
The City selected KTUA to provide full landscape architectural services to refurbish and rebuild the various access stairways. Managing a group of five separate engineering design consultants, KTUA is leading the task to refine the conceptual plan, produce a complete construction document bid set and assist the City in the construction bidding, administration and management.
The project entails redesigning the beach access street frontage plazas and stair structures to match the Village’s theme and fulfil the City’s mission statement to “enhance the lives of all who live, work and play in our city by setting the standard…”. The project will include seating nodes and enhanced overlook platforms, re-vegetation of the slopes with California native plants, re-designing the storm-water conveyance systems, and ensuring that the access points are structurally sound and can withstand the direct coastal environment. The project is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2018, and will be phased so that beach access is always available.
