This two phase project included the initial feasibility study of the proposed project site as well as the preparation of construction documents as part of a second phase. The initial study looked at facility requirements and programming tasks as well as initial site constraints and opportunities. The project developed three dimensional models portraying the extent of the facilities as well as the extent of retaining walls, grading, lighting and fencing. Initial cost estimates were done, based on the site plan and draft grading and drainage plans. 

The second phase of the project looked at resolving problems and getting the project to fit into the very tight budget that Associated Students had available. Various alternatives were completed to address value engineering suggestions and site plan refinements that saved money. Delawie Architects was responsible for the overall set of construction documents and management in conjunction with their design / build partner CW Driver. KTUA provided adjustments to the site plans, recreational field layout and all planting and irrigation as well as final simulations using the 3D model. 

Recreation facilities and programming at a university do more than provide leisure opportunities for the campus.  These facilities and programs can play a role in the recruitment, engagement and retention of students by giving them opportunities to interact across disciplines, foster a sense of belonging, and provide shared experiences to help build and shape community.

This new 64,600 square-foot field features state-of-the art turf and lighting systems. The latest in AstroTurf technology offers excellent shock reduction, lowered temperatures and requires no water, which saves an estimated one million gallons of water per year. The LED lighting is high efficiency, low power and minimizes light spill into the surrounding areas. The lighting used on the Recreation Field also uses 60 percent less energy than traditional Metal Halide field lighting, according to Glen Brandenburg, A.S. facilities and sustainability director.

“Demand for recreation programming from SDSU students is at an all-time high,” said Aztec Recreation Director Mark Zakrzewski. “It’s wonderful to see so many students leading active, healthy lifestyles. They have high expectations for having quality recreation facilities on campus. The new field will allow us to expand and enhance programs such as intramural sports leagues, sport clubs, fitness classes and drop-in recreation opportunities.”
