SDSU’s Associated Students requested KTUA’s services to convert an existing open space lawn area on campus into a much needed 3-acre multi-purpose field for rugby, soccer and flag football. Located at the entry into the campus, the landscape design creates a park-like setting around the field with seating, curvilinear terrace walls and special lighting to allow for evening use.
Stepped terraces for seating are utilized on the south side of the field in lieu of retaining walls to address the grade difference. The curvilinear terrace walls, along with the meandering decomposed granite path around the perimeter of the field, help soften the edges. Lawn and pavers within the terraces help break up the concrete steps and to provide additional seating areas. Planting along the perimeter preserves the existing trees, provide shade and soften the edges. A prefabricated restroom building was proposed on the NW corner of the field. Sports lighting is located around the perimeter for night play.
The improved field provides increased recreational opportunities for students, including intramural sports, sport clubs, and other informal drop-in recreation opportunities for all students.
